Education Mental Health Teams (EMHTs)

The Liverpool Whole School Approach CAMHS offer is delivered by a range of services working in partnership to support children, young people, families and staff in education.

The Education Mental Health Teams (EMHTs) operate across North, South and Central Liverpool to facilitate a coordinated approach. All schools/education establishments are aligned to one of the two EMHT teams: North/Central and South/Central.

The Whole School Approach pathway model aims to support school staff in identifying the level of support needed for a child or young person and also guides them as to what support is available.

It is another step towards the national initiative to have fully trained mental health leads in all schools and will be utilised by the developing mental health support teams in schools.

EMHTs consist of a range of providers/services that deliver across the pathway, some working within targeted levels and others across levels of need.

The Alder Hey MHSTs work with schools across Liverpool in collaboration with partner agencies within the Education Mental Health Teams (EMHT).

The teams offer support to children and young people who are experiencing:

  • low mood
  • worry
  • anxiety and avoidance (e.g. simple phobias or separation anxiety)
  • sleep difficulties

The team can provide techniques and strategies to children and young people, either on a direct 1:1 basis or within school groups. MHST also work closely with parents/carers to help them understand and support their child’s mental health.

The team work collaboratively with the school’s mental health lead and senior leadership team to raise awareness and promote better mental health for everyone as part of the ‘Whole School and College Approach’.
