REACT: Managing & Decreasing Mental Health Risk

The RAISE Team is looking for a Liverpool secondary school to participate in a new pilot programme under the REACT series.

REACT: Managing & Decreasing Mental Health Risk focuses on managing risk from self-harm and suicide.

Suicidal ideation and self-harm are concerning issues for young people. This course has been developed in response to these issues; it’s been informed by Alder Hey Clinicians and aims to build coping strategies and resilience in young people. The RAISE team will provide training and resources needed to upskill pastoral staff.

REACT is a psycho-educational programme underpinned by an evidence base, which you will gain insight into. The course trains pastoral staff to deliver five 50-60-minute sessions. For the purpose of the pilot, the RAISE team will deliver these sessions to the young people. Moving forward, the pastoral staff will be given the opportunity to attend a full day of training to be then able to deliver the course themselves.

  • Recognise Risk
  • Explore Triggers and Glimmers
  • Acknowledge Coping Strategies
  • Creating safety plans and keeping safe
  • Take steps towards distress tolerance skills

REACT School Requirements

  • Pilot beginning the week commencing 11th November, with a weekly session for 5 weeks. There will also be an opportunity for a January pilot date.
  • A group of 6-10 young people
  • A pastoral staff member to shadow the course and deliver once the pilot is over.

About REACT

The MYA RAISE Team developed the REACT series of programmes to support mental health and well-being in schoolchildren.

Each programme follows a train-the-trainer model, in which professionals are trained to deliver the programme in their setting, making it more sustainable and easier to manage.

Created initially for educational professionals, the programmes have expanded to include external staff (MHSTs, EMHPs, School Nurses, and YPAS Wellbeing Clinicians) in the training to have a WSA approach to the programme.

Background of REACT:

REACT has been designed in response to feedback from staff members within education who feel that although staff time, capacity, and resources are limited, they’d like more programmes they can roll out that are ready to run with a group of young people that don’t take too much time to prepare.

While developing REACT, we have consulted with young people and pastoral staff members across the city to gather their feedback in shaping this course; the information and resources contained in this course will help you support the children and young people you work with.

How it works:

REACT aims to equip trainers to deliver five sessions across a five week block to a group of around six to ten young people.

The sessions are informed by cognitive, behavioural, and compassion therapy, especially in response to exploring thoughts, feelings and behaviour patterns around the specific REACT topic.

Each session is designed to last around 50 minutes, so they can easily be slotted into the school day or adopted in other youth settings.
